10-year-old Chihiro (Rumi Hiiragi) and her parents (Takashi Naitô, Yasuko Sawaguchi) stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into giant pigs, Chihiro meets the mysterious Haku (Miyu Irino), who explains that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm, and that she must work there to free herself and her parents.
Spirited Away is a 2001 anime fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film was released on 20 July 2001, and became the most successful film in Japanese history, grossing over $289 million worldwide and receiving widespread critical acclaim. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, making it the only hand drawn animated film and Japanese animated film to win best animated film; the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival, tied with Bloody Sunday; and is on the British Film Institute’s list of “Top fifty films for children up to the age of 14”. In 2016, it was voted the fourth best film of the 21st century as picked by 177 film critics from around the world.
