President Jokowi to Open Our Ocean Conference Next Week
President Joko Widodo is getting right behind the Ocean Conference (OOC) 2018 event, which will discuss sustainable sea management, in Nusa Dua on 29-30 October.
“I ask for a detailed report because this is another example of international belief in Indonesia in organizing world-class events. I would like to see preparations for the OOC 2018 implementation in Bali as soon as possible. Not only that, but I have also instructed my people to utilize the international event to the maximum extent possible for the national interest,” Jokowi said at the Bogor Palace on Monday (10/22).
The request was delivered at a meeting attended by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Bali Governor I Wayan Koster, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu, National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, and TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto.
It is estimated that around 1,000 foreign participants will descend on the Nusa Dua Convention Center, Bali, at the 2018 OOC event. Hearing the request, Luhut reported that the 2018 OOC is almost ready to go.
“The preparations in our opinion are 95 percent, even though there are still things here and there that we need to be improved,” said Luhut.
The OOC 2018 will discuss six main issues of marine concern, namely; the protection of marine areas, climate change, sustainable fishing systems, pollution in the oceans, maritime economic systems, and maritime security.
This OOC 2018 is the fifth worldwide meeting after being held in Washington, United States, in 2014. Participants range from government officials to social groups and advocates.
In addition to discussions and film screenings, there are also beach clean-ups and coral reef planting activities carried out throughout the series of events. President Jokowi is scheduled to open the Our Ocean Conference 2018 next week.
